Courses To Make You Go FurtherSettling In
Now that you have arrived in the UK, we'll have to get you settled in.
Orientation and Induction
Warnborough College organises orientation days and induction events to introduce new students to the college, and to the living and learning culture in the United Kingdom. It is also an opportunity for students to learn about basic rules and regulations of the College and to ask any questions they may have about living and studying in the UK. Information on these events are usually provided within your admissions pack. It is advisable for you to open a bank account in the UK, even if you are only studying here for a short time. You will normally need photo identification and proof of your home address from your home bank. Some banks may not let you open an account if you are staying for less than 9 months. You should consider opening a "current account" as that will allow you to write checks and use a cheque guarantee card. Most banks will provide you with the information you need, otherwise contact Student Services. When students live and study in a strange new country with many differences in the way of life, speech, customs, etiquette and learning, they may experience what is known as "culture shock". This can make the student feel depressed, homesick, scared and/or at a loss. There are many ways in which students can acclimatise and integrate into the new culture without losing their own identities. The websites below provided extensive information about how to recover from culture shock. Students are also encouraged to talk to our advisers and counsellors - they are there to help you. You may find that institutions in the UK use or encourage a different study or learning method to what you are used to. Generally, class sizes are kept small (less than 15 students per class), although lectures may be quite large. For a more comprehensive guide to the styles of teaching normally used, and tips on how to study effectively, look at UKCISA's "Study Methods in the UK". Click here to find out how to do well in class. One of the best way to get over homesickness is to make new friends. Don't restrict yourself to just friends from your own country. Make friends with people from other countries and the United Kingdom. It is a brilliant way to learn about other cultures whilst sharing ideas and having fun. You can also organise special events or participate in group sports and activities. Each Learning Centre will have its own clubs and activities. Check what your passport sticker (entry clearance or residence permit) says. If you are in the UK with student immigration permission and your passport sticker says "Work (and any changes) must be authorised" or "Able to work as authorised by the Secretary of State", you can work up to 20 hours a week during term-time and full-time during your holidays, a work placement which is part of a sandwich course, or an internship. If your passport sticker says "No work", you must not work in the UK. This would be a breach of your immigration conditions, which is a criminal offence.Opening a Bank Account
