International Summer School

The 2009 International Summer School UK Programme is multi-disciplinary in nature and interdisciplinary in approach—and designed to satisfy a broad range of interests. A primary goal is to acquaint attendees with some of the important and wondrous monuments and areas of the United Kingdom, and to present programme content in a multicultural, global framework. The programme will facilitate cross-cultural understanding, encourage deeper interest and investigation, and provide attendees with a great deal of fun!

The program will be based in London for 4½ (with days trips to Oxford and Bath). We will then relocate to Canterbury for a calmer setting, remaining there for 4 days. From Canterbury, we will travel to Dublin for 5 days. We will return to London from Dublin—and celebrate our last evening of the programme at a medieval banquet at Hatfield House. Attendees should plan to leave the U.K. no earlier than the day following the Hatfield House event.

Students may earn college credit for papers and/or projects submitted to Warnborough within six weeks after the conclusion of the program. These projects must be related to an area addressed during the program, and all topics must be pre-approved by Warnborough. Students should plan on keeping a travel journal, and will need to complete in-depth research following the programme. On-site activities and events referred to in this proposal have been developed and coordinated by the programme leader and museum education department specialists.

Format

Daily programs will generally begin with a brief introduction to the day’s activities. A visual presentation followed by a discussion session will orient participants to the topic(s) of the day. Excursions and workshops will follow, and continue into the afternoons; optional activities (e.g. film screenings and open art studio workshop sessions) will be held in the evenings.

Please note:  Attendees will be given a complete list of books and works of art to be addressed in the program, all of which are available for viewing online, purchase, rental, or through libraries. Participants are encouraged (but not required) to review these materials in advance of the program.

When and How

The workshop will be held from 12 to 25 August, 2009.

Accommodations must be arranged directly by participants, although Warnborough can provide some assistance with preferential rates in various locations (before April 25). Places are strictly limited to 15 people per workshop so we will not be able to entertain last minute bookings.

The fee for the whole program is US$2,700.

Warnborough graduates and students will receive a 10% discount. Warnborough students may also take the program “for credit” for an additional fee. Students taking the program for credit will be required to complete assignments for submission after the program has ended.

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements apart from a proficiency in English, an interest in history and an appreciation for travel and learning about other cultures. Please contact us for more details.
