English For Academic Purposes

This programme is for serious high-intermediate and advanced students seeking to bolster their English language skills in order to be ready for a University degree or further study. The programme is rigorous and homework may be assigned on a regular basis.

What this course includes

Students will focus on four main areas: reading, writing, speaking and listening. The content will be geared towards tertiary level studies, expectations and will even include basic research methodologies.

At university, students are expected to work and think independently, be capable of presenting topics to groups, and write in a clear and academic manner.

English for Academic Purposes will cover:

  1. Vocabulary development
  2. Grammar consolidation and improvement
  3. Report writing
  4. Essay writing
  5. Presentation skills and practice
  6. Research methodology
  7. Debating and discussing topics
  8. Reading, writing, and listening comprehension
  9. Note-taking and summarising skills

 

Requirements

This programme is for high-intermediate and advanced students. Students should have a minimum TOEFL score of approximately 500 (173 for computer-based TOEFL or a 61 on the internet-based TOEFL).

All students are given a placement test on the first day of the program. Any students not achieving the required score on this test will be required to do top-up classes on the General English programme.
